A little further away

  • Oeschinensee

  • St. Beatus Caves

Their website calls them one of the largest stalactite caves in Switzerland. 14 km explored, 1 km open all year round, between 8 and 10 °C.

When to go

The lifts and summer buses that take you to the start, with their dates.

At altitude there can be snow even in summer, and in late autumn some bridges or safety cables are taken down. Before you set off, ask the mountain railway, the municipality or the tourist office about the state of the trails. Randa council information

Farmhouse and Hotel Waldhaus in the Gasterntal

Hotels, a tunnel and a firing range

After 1890, Kandersteg's tourism reached up into the Gasterntal, and the hotels still standing today were built. Under your feet runs the Lötschberg tunnel: on 24 July 1908, water and rock burst into the tunnel right below the valley, and 25 Italian miners lost their lives.

The longest downhill in the world

The Lauberhorn races have been held in Wengen since 1930, on a downhill their organisers call the longest in the world. The fastest skiers race down it in about two and a half minutes. In 2026, the start was set on the Hundschopf for the first time, the very spot you cross on foot.

Lauberhorn Trail2 h 50
The Allmendhubel funicular rising above Mürren

Mürren, from alpine pasture to resort

Mürren was probably an alpine pasture until people from the Lötschental arrived, after 1300. Before the railway of 1891, tourists could only come up by mule; yet by around 1888, Mürren and Gimmelwald already had more than half the hotel beds in the municipality. Until the First World War, the British were the largest group of visitors.
