Hiking by public transport: start here, finish over there

Pick your station and your day: we show you the hikes that fit in a day, from the first train out to the last one home.

Where are you starting from?
Which day?

Your day, train included

For each hike: the first train after 7 am from your station, the official walking time, then the last connection that gets you back the same evening. Everything comes from the official timetable, read for the day you picked.

Reading the official timetable…

Which region?
Show first

Keep some time in hand: the official walking time doesn’t include breaks. Before you go, check your journey in the SBB Mobile app, the day before and on the morning.

Starting from somewhere else? Every hike page shows the next departures from the stop where the hike ends.

One-way hikes, Switzerland’s real luxury

Your hike doesn’t have to be a loop: go up one side, come down the other. 25 of the 34 Bivio hikes finish somewhere other than where they start.

The easiest way: the SBB Mobile app, before you get on. The links take you to the official pages.

Seasonal lifts and PostBuses

A scheduled departure

The official timetable shows a scheduled departure; it doesn’t tell you whether a lift is running that day. At the start and end of the season, call the operator.

Mountain pass routes

Some need a reservation. One example published by PostBus: the central Alps pass circuits run from 20 June to 4 October 2026; for the three- and four-pass routes, individual travellers book by 4 pm the day before at the latest, on +41 848 818 818.

Questions people ask

Where do I buy a train ticket for a hike in Switzerland?

In the SBB Mobile app: search your trip and pay in two taps. You can also buy it on sbb.ch or at a station counter.

Does the Half Fare travelcard work on PostBuses?

Yes. SBB says the Half Fare travelcard gives you half price on PostBuses and boats, as well as most railways.

Is the GA valid on cable cars?

It depends on the line. In principle the GA is valid on all public transport, with a few exceptions: the area of validity map on sbb.ch tells you where.

Do I need to book a PostBus?

On some mountain pass routes, yes. For the three- and four-pass routes in the Central Alps, PostBus asks individual travellers to book by 4 p.m. the day before.

How do I find the last train back?

For the hikes listed here, the Bivio page shows the last departure of the day from the official timetable. For the others, check the official timetable from the stop at the finish.

I don't live in Switzerland. Is there a discount?

The Swiss Half Fare Card, for people living outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein, lasts one month and cuts fares on trains, buses, boats, mountain railways and gondolas.
